Around the same time as Hassan rejected the book offer, Manji’s attempts to get Hassan and herself a feature on 60 Minutes were starting to get results. I was visited by two journalists from CBS’s London bureau who wanted to know what Hassan was about. At first I judged that Michael Gavshon, a South African émigré, and his colleague Drew Magratten, a newly married American who had just moved to London from New York, were hardworking but simple people. It was an easy mistake to make. With his polite and gentle manner, the mass of brown curls atop his head and his casual woollen jumper/brown loafers/khaki trouser get-up, Magratten struck me as the archetypal nice guy, someone who had never uttered a profanity in his life and always rang his mother when he should. Though quicker in conversation, with more of a worldly air about him, Gavshon was often the quieter of the two. Both asked me the same questions about Hassan over and over again. First Magratten, and then Gavshon, and then Magratten again – each time rephrasing the questions in a slightly different manner. I assumed that they never really understood what I was trying to say, especially when it came to explaining the generational factors that had driven many young Muslims to become radicals and terrorists. They also took a vast quantity of written material from me. At Hassan’s request, I gave Gavshon and Magratten all of the interview transcripts, the early drafts of the book, all the press clippings that I had found on Hassan’s past, and a copy of the entire bibliography on extremism that I’d collected over the years.
I also explained why I believed Hassan was who he said he was. I told them about his links with Yassir al-Sirri, Hassan’s emir, and explained that many of the people who Hassan had spoken about had later been arrested on charges of terrorism.
